CHICAGO, IL – A late-night confrontation between Chicago Police and an armed suspect ended in gunfire Monday night, leaving one man in serious condition and disrupting local transit for several hours.
Gunfire Erupts During Police Stop
The incident occurred around 10:35 p.m. in the 3100-block of East 83rd Street. According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), officers stopped a man who was allegedly in possession of a firearm.
During the encounter, shots were fired and the suspect was struck. Police confirmed that a firearm was recovered at the scene. The suspect was immediately taken into custody and transported to the University of Chicago Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.
Officer Status and Investigation
While no officers were struck by the gunfire, both involved officers were taken to a local hospital for observation.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has launched an investigation into the shooting. As per standard protocol, the officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days while the investigation proceeds.
Transit Disruptions Resolved
The shooting investigation led to significant overnight travel delays in the South Shore area. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) implemented a temporary reroute for #N5 South Shore Night buses near 83rd and Houston.
By 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, the CTA confirmed that the scene had been cleared and normal bus service had resumed.
