West Chester Township, Ohio — A police response to reports of a woman screaming for help ended in a fatal officer-involved shooting Thursday night, leaving one man dead and prompting an independent state investigation.
Authorities say officers were responding to a potential emergency inside an apartment when the deadly encounter unfolded.
Neighbor Reports Woman Screaming for Help
According to township officials, police were dispatched at approximately 9:50 p.m. on June 4 to an apartment complex located on Zinnia Court.
The response came after a resident reported hearing a woman screaming for help from inside a neighboring apartment.
Concerned for the welfare of those inside, officers quickly arrived at the scene to investigate the situation.
Officials said the nature of the call raised immediate concerns about the safety of the apartment’s occupants.
Officers Enter Apartment During Welfare Check
Upon arrival, officers reportedly knocked on the apartment door and announced their presence.
According to a news release, officers later entered the residence because they were concerned someone inside could be in danger.
Authorities stated that officers began conducting what was described as a “protective search” of the apartment to determine whether anyone required assistance.
The search eventually led officers to one of the apartment’s bedrooms.
Shooting Occurs Inside Bedroom
During the search, officers encountered a man inside the bedroom.
Officials confirmed that a shooting occurred during that encounter, though many details remain unclear. Authorities have not yet disclosed what specifically prompted officers to use their firearms.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released publicly, was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers suffered serious injuries during the incident, according to township officials.
