SUNSET BEACH, N.C. – Police in Sunset Beach were forced to call in reinforcements Monday after a resident reported a “monster” alligator wandering dangerously close to a local roadway.
A Massive Struggle
The reptile, which measured an impressive 10 feet, 10 inches and weighed nearly 400 pounds, was initially reported by a resident as being 15 feet long. When officers arrived on the scene, they quickly realized that the sheer size of the gator required additional help from animal control and extra police units.
Bodycam and witness video showed at least three officers and animal control experts using snares and ropes to wrangle the beast. The alligator put up a significant fight, performing a “death roll” to try and break free before finally being secured.
Record-Breaking Size
The responding animal control officer noted that this was the largest alligator he had ever encountered in the Sunset Beach area. Experts estimate the alligator is between 25 and 30 years old.
Due to its proximity to the road and the risk to public safety, the decision was made to relocate the animal. It was successfully transported and released into a safe, nearby lake away from residential traffic.
Mating Season Warning
The Sunset Beach Police Department issued a reminder to residents that alligator sightings are expected to rise. Mating season runs through June, a period when male alligators become much more active, mobile, and territorial.
Authorities advise the public to keep a safe distance from any alligator sightings and to report any animals that appear to be a threat to safety.
