RIVERSIDE, CA – A devastating apartment fire near the UC Riverside campus destroyed dozens of units late Friday morning, displacing approximately 150 tenants, including several college students.
Accidental Blaze Sparks Major Emergency
The fire broke out in the 3900 block of Iowa Avenue, sending a massive tower of black smoke into the sky that was visible from across the university campus.
According to fire authorities, a contractor working on an indoor project accidentally sparked the blaze. The flames quickly tore through the upper floor of the two-story building and burned completely through the roof.
Extensive Property Damage and Pet Rescues
Riverside Division Chief Gregg White confirmed that out of the complex’s 100+ units, about 50 were damaged by fire, smoke, or water.
Emergency crews worked efficiently to ensure all residents evacuated safely. No human injuries were reported, and firefighters successfully rescued seven cats and one dog from the burning structure.
University and Community Support
An emergency evacuation center has been established at the Stratton Community Center at Bordwell Park to assist the displaced residents.
While the property is not owned or operated by UC Riverside, school officials confirmed that many students live in the immediate area. The university released a statement confirming they are working to identify affected students to provide immediate resources, housing assistance, and basic needs.
The UC Riverside Police Department is handling traffic control and continues to ask the public to avoid Iowa Avenue while operations wind down.
