Queens, New York — An off-duty New York Police Department captain has been charged after authorities say he attacked a man accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl, according to police and court documents.
Capt. Kai Bowen, 42, was arrested in Queens last week following an alleged altercation with 67-year-old Mahadeo Narain, who had been charged a day earlier in a separate case involving accusations of sexual misconduct with a minor.
Prosecutors say Bowen allegedly confronted Narain and physically assaulted him during the incident.
“Authorities say the off-duty officer allegedly threw the man to the ground, punched him multiple times, kicked him, and placed his hands around the man’s neck.”
Assault charges filed against police captain
According to a criminal complaint, Bowen allegedly grabbed Narain, slammed him to the ground, and repeatedly struck him with his fists.
Investigators also claim Bowen kicked Narain in the leg and attempted to choke him, actions that led prosecutors to file multiple charges.
Bowen is now facing:
- Second-degree assault
- Criminal obstruction of breathing
- Harassment
The charges were filed after the altercation was reported to authorities.
Victim treated for injuries at hospital
Court documents say Narain suffered facial lacerations, red marks on his shoulders, and bruising on his leg during the alleged assault.
He was later transported to Jamaica Hospital where he received medical treatment for his injuries.
“Prosecutors say the victim experienced visible injuries and substantial pain following the incident.”
Man previously charged with sexual misconduct
Just one day before the alleged assault, Narain had been arrested and charged with several offenses involving a minor.
According to a separate complaint, Narain is accused of:
- Forcible touching
- Endangering the welfare of a child
- Third-degree sexual abuse
Prosecutors allege he groped a 15-year-old girl, squeezed her chest, and attempted to kiss her.
Sources told local media that the teenage girl involved in the case is believed to be a relative of Bowen.
Court proceedings continue in both cases
Bowen was released from custody on his own recognizance following his arrest and is scheduled to return to court on April 27.
His attorney said the defense believes the officer did nothing criminal.
“We’re confident that Kai did nothing criminal and when the facts come out, the public will understand what happened,” Bowen’s lawyer said.
Meanwhile, Narain has been placed on supervised release and is subject to an order of protection involving the teenage girl.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on May 6 as the charges against him proceed through the legal process.
Investigation and legal process ongoing
Both cases remain active as prosecutors and defense attorneys prepare for upcoming court hearings.
Authorities have not indicated whether additional charges or disciplinary actions related to Bowen’s role as an NYPD officer may follow.
