Oakland, California — Drivers in Oakland are now facing fines as the city’s automated speed camera program officially moves into its enforcement phase. After several weeks of issuing warnings, officials confirmed that speeding citations began Sunday through Oakland’s automated speed camera system.
The cameras were first activated earlier this year, but the city initially provided a grace period during which drivers received warnings instead of fines. With that period now over, drivers caught speeding will begin receiving tickets by mail.
“The goal is to change behavior and get people to slow down,” said Oakland City District 2 Councilmember and Public Safety Chair Charlene Wang.
City leaders say the program is aimed at improving road safety and reducing serious crashes across Oakland.
Cameras installed at high-injury traffic locations
The automated speed cameras are currently installed at 18 locations across Oakland. Officials selected the sites based on areas with a history of frequent traffic injuries and dangerous speeding behavior.
The system automatically detects vehicles traveling 11 miles per hour or more above the posted speed limit.
When a violation occurs, the camera captures an image of the vehicle’s license plate, which allows the city to issue a citation to the registered owner.
“The cameras are designed to monitor vehicles exceeding the speed limit by at least 11 miles per hour.”
City officials say the locations were carefully chosen to target streets where speeding has contributed to serious or fatal crashes.
Fines can reach up to $500
Drivers caught by the cameras may face fines ranging from $50 to $500, depending on how far above the speed limit the vehicle was traveling.
The citation will be sent through the mail after the violation is recorded and reviewed.
Officials hope the financial penalties will discourage dangerous driving and encourage motorists to follow speed limits.
Warning phase revealed widespread speeding
During the program’s initial rollout, the city allowed a warning period to give drivers time to adjust before enforcement began.
In the first five weeks after the cameras were activated, officials reported issuing about 140,000 warning notices to drivers who exceeded speed limits.
“The volume of warnings shows just how widespread speeding has become in Oakland,” Wang said.
City leaders say the data highlights the scale of the speeding problem on Oakland streets.
Program part of statewide pilot initiative
Oakland’s speed camera program is part of a five-year pilot project operating in six California cities, including San Francisco.
The initiative aims to evaluate whether automated enforcement can help reduce speeding and improve pedestrian safety.
Local leaders say speed plays a critical role in crash outcomes.
“When someone is driving at 50 miles per hour, there is about a three-in-four chance a pedestrian will be killed in a collision,” Wang said.
She added that reducing speeds to around 25 miles per hour dramatically increases a pedestrian’s chances of surviving a crash.
