DILLEY, TX – While many families prepare for traditional Mother’s Day celebrations, a nationwide wave of support is providing a different kind of gift for women held at the Dilley Immigration Center in South Texas.
A Mother’s Inspiration
Casey Revkin, the founder of the nonprofit Each Step Home, shared that her own journey as a mother sparked the mission to help families separated by immigration practices.
“I think about my own son and everything I do to take care of him,” Revkin stated. She noted that while she can monitor her child’s sleep, food, and schooling, mothers in detention are stripped of those basic parenting roles. Her goal was to provide them with the essentials they lack.
Donations Surpass Expectations
The community response has been overwhelming. Initially setting a goal of $10,000 for the Mother’s Day holiday, the campaign saw donations pour in from across the country. Just two days before the holiday, the total had reached approximately $35,000.
Many contributors are mothers themselves or are donating in honor of their own grandmothers. Along with the funds, donors have sent messages of encouragement to let the women in the Dilley facility know they are not forgotten.
Impact on the Ground
The funds are already making a tangible difference for those inside the South Texas center. One mother shared a message of gratitude, explaining that the support allowed her to purchase:
- Clean drinking water
- Nutritious oatmeal
- Phone calls to reach her family
“That just hit me so hard,” Revkin said, reflecting on how basic necessities can mean so much to those in isolation.
How to Support Local Families
As the holiday approaches, Each Step Home continues to facilitate these efforts, ensuring that mothers in the most difficult circumstances feel the support of a wider community.
