CHULA VISTA, CA – A string of serious crashes along Olympic Parkway has sparked outrage among Chula Vista residents, who say the busy thoroughfare has turned into a dangerous “speedway.”
Double Collision Weekend
The safety concerns intensified following two separate incidents involving Chula Vista Police Department (CVPD) vehicles. The first occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday near Santa Venetia Street, where a suspected DUI driver allegedly ran a red light and slammed into a patrol car. The impact was so severe that the officer was trapped inside the vehicle.
Less than 24 hours later, a second CVPD vehicle was involved in a crash near Heritage Road at approximately noon on Monday. While the second incident remains under investigation, the proximity and timing have alarmed the local community.
A History Of Danger
For those living near Otay Ranch, these accidents are part of a persistent pattern. Data from UC Berkeley’s Transportation Injury Mapping System reveals that 79 crashes were reported along Olympic Parkway between 2021 and 2025.
“Once a month there’s a crash, at least,” said local resident Marco Martinez. Parents are particularly worried about the safety of thousands of students at nearby Otay Ranch High School, many of whom walk or bike along these roads daily.
City Leadership Responds
Chula Vista Mayor John McCann stated that the city is moving toward immediate solutions. Proposed measures expected for approval this summer include:
- Increased Patrols: Adding new traffic safety patrol officers to the city budget.
- Focused Enforcement: Targeted monitoring of Olympic Parkway and Otay Lakes Road.
- Infrastructure Review: Evaluating the roadway to ensure safer commutes for residents.
Community Outlook
While the city plans for a safer budget, residents say the changes are long overdue. With more teenage drivers joining the road, the community is calling for stricter speed enforcement and better signal timing to prevent further tragedies.
