SANTA MONICA, CA – A quick-thinking shopper successfully tracked down her own stolen purse on Tuesday afternoon, leading to the arrest of a female suspect in downtown Santa Monica.
Theft Inside Downtown Store
The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. inside a retail store located in the 400 block of Broadway. According to the Santa Monica Police Department, the victim temporarily left her purse hanging near a mirror while shopping.
When she returned about 10 minutes later, the purse was gone. The victim recalled seeing another woman standing closely to her items just before they vanished.
The Digital Tracker Confrontation
Instead of waiting, the victim immediately contacted a family member to activate a tracking feature on a phone left inside the stolen purse.
The tracker led the victim directly to the area of 6th Street and Broadway. Upon locating the suspect, the victim confronted her, prompting the woman to return the stolen purse before authorities arrived.
Suspect Arrested
Responding Santa Monica police officers took over the scene and officially placed the suspect under arrest. She is currently facing charges on suspicion of petty theft.
Officials are using this incident to remind downtown shoppers to keep their personal belongings secure and within sight at all times, especially in busy retail areas.
