Tampa, Florida — Tampa International Airport ignited a social media firestorm after posting what appeared to be a bold new dress code rule: a ban on pajamas inside the airport.
The airport’s official X account declared, “It’s time to ban pajamas at Tampa International Airport,” triggering a wave of reactions from travelers who weren’t sure whether the announcement was serious.
The post doubled down with dramatic flair.
“We’ve seen enough. We’ve had enough. It’s time to ban pajamas at Tampa International Airport… Pajamas. At. The. Airport. In the middle of the day.”
The airport even referenced a prior tongue-in-cheek “Crocs ban,” joking about becoming the world’s first “Crocs-free AND pajama-free airport.”
Social Media Erupts
Travelers quickly flooded the comment section — some outraged, others amused.
One user fired back:
“What kind of authoritarian bulls— is this?”
Another questioned how officials would even define pajamas.
“Are sweatpants, yoga pants, children wearing soft clothes pajamas?”
Others supported the sentiment, calling for a return to more polished travel attire.
“Let’s go back to the way it was in the ‘50s, ’60s and ’70s!” one commenter wrote.
Meanwhile, critics urged airport officials to focus on more pressing issues.
“If they don’t smell bad and aren’t bothering anyone, why do y’all care so much? Can y’all focus on cleaning your bathrooms and speeding up TSA lines instead?”
Airport Clarifies It Was a Joke
After the backlash gained traction, Tampa International Airport clarified that the post was satirical.
In a statement, officials said the airport regularly shares “lighthearted, satirical social media content” to engage followers.
“Today’s post about ‘banning’ pajamas was another playful nod to day-of-travel fashion debates,” the airport said, adding that passengers are encouraged to travel comfortably.
Despite the clarification, the debate reignited broader discussions about travel etiquette and public dress codes.

Broader Trend in Travel Dress Codes
The pajama controversy comes amid growing conversations about decorum while traveling.
Recently, Norwegian Cruise Line faced backlash after introducing stricter restaurant dress codes, including bans on shorts and flip-flops in certain venues.
In November, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also weighed in on travel etiquette, encouraging passengers to dress “with some respect.”
“Let’s try not to wear slippers and pajamas as we come to the airport,” Duffy said, while urging civility and courtesy during busy travel periods.
He also encouraged travelers to help one another with overhead luggage and practice patience during holiday travel surges.
Comfort vs. Class Debate
The Tampa airport post, even as satire, highlights an ongoing divide between travelers who prioritize comfort and those who believe public spaces — especially airports and airplanes — call for more traditional attire.
While there is no actual pajama ban at Tampa International Airport, the social media stunt has sparked a larger conversation about expectations, etiquette and evolving travel culture.
