LAKE GENEVA, WI – A tragic boating accident on Friday afternoon claimed the lives of three children after a sudden, violent storm capsized a recreational vessel on Lake Geneva.
Tragedy During Holiday Weekend
The incident occurred on the first day of the Fourth of July holiday weekend, a time when tourism typically doubles the population of Walworth County.
According to local authorities, a privately owned motorboat carrying ten occupants—six adults and four children—was attempting to navigate to safety as severe weather conditions rapidly deteriorated. The vessel was quickly overwhelmed by strong winds and heavy waves, taking on water before capsizing and sinking.
Rescue Operations and Casualties
Multiple emergency agencies responded immediately to the rescue effort. First responders successfully pulled six adults and one child from the water.
Emergency crews located the remaining three children and attempted lifesaving measures, but all three were later pronounced dead. Officials confirmed that all four children aboard the boat were wearing life jackets when the vessel capsized.
Widespread Storm Damage Across Walworth County
The same severe storm system caused extensive damage throughout southeast Wisconsin and the Chicago area. High winds downed power lines, damaged homes, and scattered trees across almost every road within local subdivisions.
Walworth County Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Tom Hausner stated that local resources, including police, fire, and EMS, have been stretched to unprecedented levels. Hospitals in the area faced diversions due to the high volume of storm-related injuries.
Investigation and Safety Warnings
The Lake Geneva Police Department and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are currently conducting a full investigation into the incident.
Authorities are strongly urging all boaters to closely monitor weather forecasts and seek safe harbor immediately when threatening weather approaches. Residents are also warned to avoid all downed power lines, which may still be live and extremely dangerous.
