Tornadoes Devastate Mississippi Communities: Multiple Homes Destroyed

Tornadoes Devastate Mississippi Communities Multiple Homes Destroyed

BROOKHAVEN, MS – A series of powerful tornadoes and severe thunderstorms tore through central and southern Mississippi on Wednesday, leaving a trail of significant destruction across several counties.

Major Damage in Bogue Chitto and Purvis

A dangerous supercell thunderstorm spawned a tornado over Bogue Chitto, approximately 80 miles northeast of Jackson. The storm hit a mobile home community directly, causing heavy structural damage and displacing several families.

Further south in Purvis, another strong tornado struck Wednesday evening. Local officials reported that the winds were powerful enough to rip roofs off numerous homes and several large buildings, including a prominent local church.

Interstate 55 Impact

The Thayer community, located south of Brookhaven, also faced the brunt of the storm. As a long-track tornado crossed Interstate 55, it severely damaged homes and left debris scattered across the highway, causing temporary travel disruptions.

National Weather Service (NWS) survey teams are expected on the ground over the next few days to officially determine the track and intensity of these storms.

Extended Weather Threat

While Mississippi assesses the damage, the severe weather threat remains active for surrounding areas. On Thursday, the primary concerns for Southern Alabama, Georgia, and the Florida Panhandle include:

  • Isolated tornadoes
  • Strong, damaging wind gusts
  • Potential for flash flooding

Heavy Rain and Flooding Concerns

Authorities warn that while the rain may help with recent drought conditions, the risk of flash flooding is high. This is especially true for areas where the ground is already saturated from Wednesday’s storms. Residents in low-lying areas are urged to stay alert through the weekend.
