BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. — A typical Tuesday afternoon at Buffalo Grove High School turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy when a freak traffic accident left a school staff member fighting for their life.
The incident occurred around 3:20 p.m., just as the school day was winding down and students were preparing to head home. According to Buffalo Grove police, the accident involved a vehicle, a utility pole, and an innocent bystander.
The Chain of Events
Preliminary reports from investigators indicate that a driver was attempting to exit the high school parking lot onto Dundee Road. For reasons still under investigation, the driver lost control, veered off the roadway, and slammed into a pole.
The force of the impact caused the pole to strike a school staff member who was in the immediate vicinity.
- The Victim: A Buffalo Grove High School staff member (identity currently withheld).
- Condition: Transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
- The Driver: Remained at the scene and is said to be cooperating fully with law enforcement.
Major Investigation Underway
The severity of the crash prompted a massive emergency response. The Buffalo Grove Police Department Traffic Unit and the Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) were called in to reconstruct the scene.
As a result of the investigation, Dundee Road was shuttered in both directions for over three hours, causing significant traffic delays during the evening commute. Authorities are looking into all potential factors, including mechanical failure, driver error, or medical emergencies, though no charges have been filed at this time.
A Community in Shock
The accident was witnessed by several students and colleagues, prompting an immediate emotional response from the school administration. In a heartfelt letter sent to parents and the community, Principal Jeff Wardle addressed the trauma of the event.
“Several staff and students witnessed this serious accident,” Wardle wrote. “Traumatic events like this can be upsetting to hear about, and support is available at school for any students who may need to speak with a member of Student Services.”
The school has confirmed that counselors and trusted staff members will be on-site throughout the week to help the student body navigate the aftermath of the accident. Wardle urged the community to “keep those involved in your thoughts and prayers.”
Ongoing Support
As the Buffalo Grove community waits for updates on the staff member’s recovery, local residents are reminded to be extra vigilant during school release hours. Further information regarding the cause of the crash or the health status of the victim has not yet been released.
