Two Houston Residents Monitored After Hantavirus Outbreak On Cruise Ship

HOUSTON, TX – The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has confirmed that two residents from the Houston area were among the passengers on a cruise ship currently dealing with a Hantavirus outbreak.

Texas Passengers Return Home

According to state health officials, the two Texans departed the MV Hondius and returned to the U.S. before the outbreak was officially identified. Both individuals are currently asymptomatic and have agreed to a daily self-monitoring protocol, which includes regular temperature checks.

DSHS stated that the residents are in contact with public health officials and will report any changes in their health immediately.

Low Risk of Person-to-Person Spread

While Hantavirus can be serious, medical experts are urging the public not to panic. Dr. Jade Le, an infectious disease physician with Access TeleCare, explained that Hantavirus does not spread easily like COVID-19.

“You actually have to be staying in the same room within close contact for a prolonged period of time to get it,” Dr. Le stated. She also noted that there are currently no documented cases of the virus being transmitted by someone who is not showing symptoms.

Quarantine and Monitoring Challenges

The CDC is currently working with international partners as the MV Hondius prepares to dock in the Canary Islands. Remaining American passengers on the ship are expected to undergo an epidemiological assessment upon their arrival at a preplanned isolation site.

Because the incubation period for Hantavirus can last anywhere from one to six weeks, officials admit that long-term quarantine for asymptomatic individuals presents a significant challenge.

Travel Advice for Summer Vacations

Despite the headlines, health experts say it is not time to cancel travel plans. Dr. Le recommends that families proceed with their summer vacations and graduations, noting that the chances of contracting the virus on a standard cruise ship remain extremely low.
