WASHINGTON, D.C. — If your name is Mike, Michael, or even Michelle, you might want to clear your lunch schedule for Wednesday, May 6. In a bold marketing move aimed at both celebrating its leadership and taking a playful swipe at the competition, Firehouse Subs has announced a nationwide “Name Day” promotion that is sure to draw crowds at its 1,200+ locations.
For one day only, the sandwich chain is giving away a free medium Steak & Cheese Melt to anyone who shares a variation of the name “Mike.”
Who Qualifies for the Freebie?
The company is keeping the criteria broad to include as many fans as possible. According to a news release from Firehouse Subs, if your name is Mike, Michael, Mikey, Miguel, Mikaela, Michelle, Michele, or Michaela, you are eligible for the deal.
The offer isn’t strictly limited to first names, either. Firehouse Subs clarified that as long as a variation of the name appears on your official government-issued ID, “you’re official.” Participants should be prepared to show their ID to store staff to claim their sub.
Why the Name ‘Mike’?
The inspiration behind the promotion is two-fold. First, it serves as an introduction for the company’s president, Mike Hancock.
“We’re proud of this sub – the prime rib, the caramelized onions, the top-cut roll. Once people try it, we think it earns its place among the best steak subs out there,” said Hancock. “Sharing it with every Mike in America felt like a great way to kick things off.”
However, industry insiders and PEOPLE have reported a more competitive motive: the name selection is a subtle “jab” at Firehouse’s rival, Jersey Mike’s. By giving away free food to “Mikes,” Firehouse is attempting to win over loyalists from its competitor in the ongoing “Sandwich Wars.”
A Closer Look at the Menu Item
The sandwich being offered is the Prime Rib Steak & Cheese Melt, a premium addition to the Firehouse lineup. It features:
- Flame-seared prime rib
- Melted provolone cheese
- Brown sugar caramelized onions
- Red and green bell peppers
- Served on a signature top-cut roll
While “The Mikes” are getting their moment for free, the company noted on Instagram that the sub is available for everyone to purchase, emphasizing their confidence in the new recipe.
