ANKENY, Iowa — A routine afternoon dismissal turned into a frightening scene Tuesday when a vehicle veered off course and struck multiple students outside a private school in Ankeny, sending nine children to local hospitals.

The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. during the busy pickup period at St. Luke’s Catholic School, located on NW Weigel Drive. According to fire and police officials, a vehicle waiting in the pickup line suddenly jumped the curb and hit several students who were outside near the dismissal area.

Emergency crews responded quickly after receiving reports of the crash. Parents who were nearby rushed to help the injured children before first responders arrived, providing initial assistance in a tense and chaotic scene.

Officials confirmed that nine students were transported by ambulance to area hospitals, including Blank Children’s Hospital and MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. Some of the children suffered serious injuries, though authorities have not released specific details about their conditions. No fatalities have been reported.

The driver involved remained at the scene and is cooperating fully with investigators. Authorities said the driver was not injured. Early indications suggest the crash does not appear to have been intentional, but a full investigation is underway to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
