A 62-year-old man has been arrested in Virginia following a series of armed robberies targeting Dollar Tree stores across several jurisdictions, according to law enforcement officials.
The Mooresville Police Department reported that officers were dispatched Sunday to an armed robbery at the Dollar Tree located at 221-R Norman Station Blvd. in Mooresville.
Surveillance Footage Shows Armed Threat
Investigators said surveillance video from inside the store showed a male suspect entering the business, approaching employees, and brandishing a handgun. Authorities said the suspect demanded money from the store’s safe located inside the office area.
After obtaining the cash, the suspect allegedly took the store’s phone and fled the scene.
Pattern of Robberies Identified
During the investigation, detectives determined that multiple armed robberies had occurred at other Dollar Tree locations in surrounding jurisdictions in the days leading up to the Mooresville incident. By analyzing evidence and identifying the suspect’s vehicle, investigators were able to develop a lead.
Suspect Arrested in Virginia
Warrants were issued for David Daniel Hunter, and he was taken into custody Wednesday in Bristol, Virginia, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service.
Hunter is currently being held without bond pending extradition. Authorities said he is being housed in Abingdon, Virginia, at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority.
Charges and Ongoing Investigation
Hunter has been charged with Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. Police say additional charges are expected as investigators continue coordinating with neighboring jurisdictions where similar robberies were reported.
The Mooresville Police Department said the investigation remains active and urged anyone with additional information related to the case to contact local law enforcement.
