Into the Woods!

Ah, September. A month of change, when the leaves get a new coat of color, and the air ever so slightly cools down. Also, it’s the start of a new MPHS Musical! This year’s pick is Into The Woods, a wonderfully twisted fairytale musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine.

Now, you may think you know these stories, but that’s where you’re wrong. Into The Woods is a reimagining of classic Brothers Grimm fairy tales: Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, and all the regulars that you’d expect from a Brothers Grimm fairy tale. The main plot follows a baker and his wife (creatively named Baker and Baker’s Wife) who are trying for a child when suddenly a witch appears and tells the Baker that he cannot have a child due to his father being cursed by her. And there’s only one way to break the curse. He must go on a fetch quest to gather materials to make a potion, and he has to go… Into The Woods (See what I did there?). Little does he know, the items he needs are in the possession of a few of our favorite fairytale figures. And I think we’ll stop right there. Wouldn’t want to spoil it too much, or otherwise, you’d have no reason to watch it. There’s laughter, anguish, sadness, and more importantly, a Witch, weaving their stories together. To say that I am excited might be a little of an understatement. Honestly, I haven’t been this excited for a show since 42nd Street in ‘33 (that was a joke, for I had not yet been brought to existence).

Anyway, if that whole spiel somehow caught your attention, it is too late to audition, however, you can still attend the crew informational meeting on Friday the 15th during advisory.

And speaking of auditions, MPHS your days of waiting are over! Without further ado, your cast for 2023’s Into The Woods!!!
