A Kenyan family based in Waterloo, Iowa, is grieving an unimaginable loss after three siblings died following a devastating road accident in Kenya while on a family holiday meant to be a joyful reunion.
What Happened
The fatal crash occurred on January 4, 2026, in Soysambu, Gilgil, along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru Highway. The victims were identified as:
- Emmanuel DeLeon (13)
- Kairu Winkelpleck (6)
- Njeri DeLeon (16)
The children were visiting Kenya with their parents when the accident occurred.
According to family accounts, Emmanuel and Kairu died instantly at the scene, while their elder sister Njeri sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a Nairobi hospital. She was placed in a medically induced coma but sadly passed away on Friday evening, days after the crash, despite intensive medical care.
Family Background
The three siblings were the children of Wangui Ndirangu, formerly of New Jersey and currently residing in Iowa. They are:
- Niece and nephews of Kairu Ndirangu, Wamuyu, Njeri, and Daisy Kariuki
- Grandchildren of the late Charity Ndirangu and Jim Ndirangu
Their deaths have sent shockwaves through both Kenyan and American communities, especially among families in Iowa with Kenyan roots.

This tragedy comes amid growing concern over road safety in Kenya, particularly on major highways.
According to the latest police report, more than 290 people were killed in road accidents within the first 21 days of January 2026.

The tragedy prompted an outpouring of grief across Waterloo schools.
In a statement released on January 8, Hoover Middle School confirmed the deaths of Emmanuel and Kairu, noting that Njeri was then in critical condition.
“We are heartbroken to share that Emmanuel, one of our 8th graders, and his younger brother passed away at the scene.”
Following Njeri’s passing, tributes continued from students, teachers, and community members, reflecting the deep impact the siblings made despite their young ages.
The school has since opened a GoFundMe account, urging well-wishers to support the family during this painful time.
