WORCESTER, MA — A Massachusetts community is in shock after a 4-year-old boy survived a harrowing seven-story fall from an apartment window on Wednesday evening. Authorities are calling the child’s survival a “miracle” after he plunged more than 60 feet onto the ground below.
The incident occurred just before 7:30 p.m. at the Lincoln Village Apartments. Despite the extreme height of the fall, the toddler was found conscious and breathing by first responders.
Saved by ‘Guardian Angels’ and Mulch
Witnesses and authorities say a combination of luck and landscaping likely saved the boy’s life. According to police, the child fell exactly 62 feet.
A neighbor, who identified himself only as Antonio, witnessed the fall in real-time and immediately called 911. He described the impact as something no one should be able to survive.
“The way he hit the ground, you don’t survive that,” Antonio told CBS News. “That kid had guardian angels. Whether people are spiritual or not, that kid had something on his shoulder that said ‘you’re not today.'”
First responders credited a bed of mulch at the base of the building for padding the impact. The child was transported to a local hospital where he remains in stable condition.
Police Investigation and Safety Warning
The Worcester Police Department’s Crime Scene Unit and Special Crimes Detectives are currently investigating the circumstances of the fall. While both parents were reportedly inside the home at the time of the incident, officials stated that no charges are expected to be filed, as it appears to be a tragic accident.
Sgt. Elise Miranda of the Worcester Police Department noted the “unique circumstance” of the survival but used the event to issue a stern warning to parents as temperatures rise across Massachusetts.
Window Safety Tips for Parents
As residents begin to open windows for the spring and summer months, Sgt. Miranda shared several critical tips to prevent similar tragedies:
- Check Your Screens: Screens are designed to keep bugs out, NOT to keep children in. They can easily pop out under the weight of a child.
- Inspect Locks: Ensure that window locks and limiters (which prevent a window from opening more than a few inches) are functional.
- Remove Furniture: Keep beds, chairs, and dressers away from windows to prevent children from climbing up to the sill.
“Everyone is going to start opening up those windows,” Miranda said. “You’re going to want to start looking at the locks on the screens and making sure they are intact.”
