Canton, Georgia — A Georgia woman has pleaded guilty to murdering a 2-year-old girl who had been in her care for more than two weeks, in a disturbing case that prosecutors say involved lethal amounts of medication, concealment of a child’s death and gruesome attempts to hide evidence.
The case has shocked the local community after authorities revealed horrifying details surrounding the death of little Alyssa Rose Davis, whose remains were discovered hidden inside the babysitter’s apartment in December 2022.
Babysitter Pleads Guilty in Toddler’s Death
According to the Cherokee County District Attorney’s Office, 44-year-old Phillissa Diallo pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, second-degree cruelty to children and concealing the death of another.
Chief Superior Court Judge David L. Cannon Jr. sentenced Diallo to 37 years, with the first 21 years to be served in prison.
The investigation began on Dec. 14, 2022, when Diallo walked into the Canton Police Department and informed officers that there was a deceased child inside her apartment.
When authorities searched the residence, they made a horrifying discovery.
Child’s Remains Found Hidden in Apartment Closet
Investigators located Alyssa’s mutilated remains inside a plastic storage bin filled with a salt-like substance and hidden beneath other items in a closet.
An autopsy later determined the child died from lethal amounts of acetaminophen and diphenhydramine. Reports identified the medications involved as Tylenol and Benadryl.
Prosecutors said Alyssa was last known to be alive on Dec. 8, though the exact date of death could not be determined. Her remains were found nearly a week later.
Authorities also revealed that Alyssa had been under Diallo’s continuous care for more than two weeks before her death.
Ring Camera Footage Became Key Evidence
During the investigation, prosecutors gathered extensive evidence, including Ring camera footage allegedly showing Diallo leaving the child alone inside the apartment for long periods.
Additional footage reportedly showed Diallo bringing bleach into the apartment, while forensic testing using Blue Star technology identified areas where investigators believe blood had been cleaned.
Officials said Alyssa’s mother remained in regular contact with Diallo during the time her daughter was missing and was completely unaware the child had died until law enforcement informed her.
Despite the disturbing evidence, prosecutors stated they could not pursue a malice murder charge because the evidence under Georgia law was insufficient to prove intent beyond legal standards required for that charge.
Prosecutors Say Child Might Have Survived
At the plea hearing, Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Rachel Hines revealed that Diallo admitted Alyssa was still alive at one point during the incident and may have survived if medical help had been sought.
“Instead of taking steps to preserve the child’s health and well-being, the defendant demonstrated willful neglect. She then took gruesome, unimaginable steps to conceal her death,” Hines said.
“Alyssa was not treated with the protection and dignity owed to every child, and that reality will haunt everyone involved in this case.”
Defense attorneys presented an independent expert who argued Diallo was delusional at the time. However, a Georgia behavioral health expert testified that she was not experiencing delusions during the incident.
Emotional Statement From Victim’s Mother
During court proceedings, Alyssa’s mother delivered an emotional impact statement, describing the devastating loss of her daughter and the lasting pain left behind.
According to prosecutors, the grieving mother said she had been “robbed” when Alyssa was taken from her and that her family would never recover from the tragedy.
The heartbreaking case has renewed conversations about child safety, caregiver responsibility and the importance of recognizing potential signs of abuse or neglect.
If you suspect child abuse, authorities urge individuals to report concerns immediately through appropriate child protection resources.
