Ocean Township, New Jersey — A New Jersey man accused of killing his wife inside their home allegedly confessed to the crime in messages sent to family members and detailed years of resentment toward her in an email before attempting suicide, according to newly released court records.
Authorities have charged 67-year-old Michael A. Kless with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, 66-year-old Stacy E. Kless.
Police Receive Calls About Alleged Confession
According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Monmouth County, investigators first learned of the alleged killing after receiving alarming reports from people who claimed Kless had admitted to the crime.
Authorities said a caller contacted police at approximately 9:32 a.m. on May 27, reporting that Kless had told him he had killed his wife and intended to take his own life.
A second caller reportedly contacted police about 14 minutes later and informed investigators that Kless had sent an email admitting he had murdered his mother.
The information prompted officers to immediately conduct a welfare check at the couple’s residence.
Investigators Cite Email Detailing Motive
Court records indicate investigators reviewed an email allegedly sent by Kless before his arrest.
According to the affidavit, the message described a “long-simmering hatred” toward Stacy Kless and referenced a new romantic relationship with a woman from Central America.
Investigators further alleged that the email contained details about the killing that matched evidence later discovered inside the home.
The email has become a significant part of the prosecution’s case as authorities continue reviewing electronic evidence seized during the investigation.
Victim Found Dead in Basement
Authorities said workers scheduled to perform repairs at the home arrived shortly before police were called.
According to investigators, the workers encountered Kless outside the residence and noticed visible injuries.
Police said the workers observed blood and a scratch on Kless’ face. He allegedly refused to allow them inside and requested that the appointment be rescheduled.
When officers later arrived at the home on Seward Drive, they forced entry to check on the occupants. Inside the basement, officers discovered Stacy Kless deceased.
According to court records, investigators found her with a barbell resting across her neck and throat. She was pronounced dead later that morning.
Additional Charges Filed
In addition to first-degree murder, prosecutors charged Kless with third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.
Authorities identified the alleged weapon as the barbell found at the scene.
Court records further indicate investigators classified the incident as a domestic violence case and alleged that Kless attempted to or did strangle the victim during the attack.
Suspect Allegedly Attempted Suicide After Fleeing
Investigators say Kless fled the residence following the incident and traveled north on the Garden State Parkway.
According to the affidavit, authorities later learned he allegedly contacted another individual and stated he was attempting to overdose on medication while at a rest stop.
Investigators also obtained text messages from the couple’s two adult children that allegedly contained admissions regarding their mother’s death.
Authorities subsequently located Kless and took him into custody. He remains hospitalized while under the custody of the Monmouth County Jail, according to prosecutors.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials continue reviewing electronic devices and evidence recovered during the case. Michael A. Kless is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
