First-Of-Its-Kind Floating Public Space Arrives In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, PA – A revolutionary new public space has officially reached the city’s waters. FloatLab, a massive 75-foot-wide bright yellow floating platform, arrived on the Tidal Schuylkill River on Wednesday morning, marking a historic milestone for Philadelphia’s riverfront development.

A Historic Journey to Bartram’s Garden

The eye-catching structure arrived near the Platt Bridge around 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10. From there, a tugboat guided it to its permanent installation site at Bartram’s Garden.

This arrival concludes a decade-long effort. FloatLab’s actual journey on the water began nearly three weeks ago, on May 21, traveling all the way from North Carolina via barge and tugboat.

America’s First Tide-Responsive Platform

Designed by artist J. Meejin Yoon and Höweler + Yoon Architecture, FloatLab holds the title of the first tide-responsive public space in the United States.

The structure features an innovative engineering design:

  • Ballast System: A specialized ballast mechanism allows the circular platform to rise and fall seamlessly with the river’s natural tidal rhythm.
  • Water-Level View: It will allow visitors to walk right down to the water’s surface, offering a unique perspective of a previously inaccessible stretch of the Schuylkill River.

Opening This Fall

The project is a collaborative effort with Bartram’s Garden and Mural Arts Philadelphia. Once it officially opens to the public this fall, FloatLab will serve as an outdoor community hub. Organizers have confirmed that entry will be entirely free to the public.

The floating space will host a variety of local programming, including:

  • Hands-on environmental workshops
  • Outdoor art programs and installations
  • Community kayaking and fishing events

Additional details regarding the official grand opening events and public schedules are expected to be released by organizers in the coming weeks.
