Cobb County, Georgia — A routine maintenance visit to an abandoned grocery store turned into a major crime scene investigation after a worker discovered the body of a man inside the vacant building, leading to an arrest and growing questions about what happened.
Authorities are now investigating the death of 43-year-old James Connell, whose body was found inside a former Kroger store that had been closed for more than a year.
Maintenance Worker Makes Disturbing Discovery
According to local reports, the discovery was made on May 22 when a maintenance worker entered the abandoned Kroger on Cobb Parkway SE to investigate a reported water leak.
While inspecting the property, the worker came across a body inside the building and immediately alerted authorities.
Police arrived at the scene at approximately 10 a.m. and began securing the area for investigation.
The grocery store had reportedly been closed since 2024, making the discovery even more unsettling for investigators and nearby residents.
Victim Identified as James Connell
Authorities later identified the deceased man as James Connell, 43. At this time, officials have not publicly released Connell’s cause of death. However, multiple reports indicate investigators believe foul play may have been involved.
Despite those suspicions, authorities have not yet filed any homicide-related charges in connection with the case.
Detectives continue gathering evidence while awaiting additional forensic results that may help determine exactly how Connell died.
Suspect Charged With Concealing Death
Following the investigation, authorities charged Micah Deangelo Garner, 34, with concealing the death of another, a felony offense under Georgia law.
According to reports, Garner is currently being held without bail.
Investigators have not publicly disclosed details explaining how Garner is allegedly connected to Connell’s death or what evidence led to the charge.
Court records show Garner had already been in custody at the Cobb County Jail since May 10 on unrelated misdemeanor charges.
Those charges include loitering or prowling and providing a false name, address or birthdate to a law enforcement officer.
It remains unclear whether Garner has retained legal representation.

As the investigation continues, Connell’s family has spoken publicly about their grief and the impact of his death.
In a statement released after the discovery, relatives described him as a caring and compassionate person whose loss has devastated those closest to him.

The statement also expressed support for investigators working to uncover the truth.

Authorities continue to treat the case as an active investigation while examining evidence collected from the abandoned property.
