San Francisco, California — A tragic crash on a California freeway has claimed the life of a teenage boy just days after he celebrated one of the biggest milestones of his life—graduating from high school.
Authorities say the fatal accident occurred during the early morning hours of May 30 and left one teenager dead and three others injured after a sports car flew off Interstate 80 and crashed into an impound yard below.
Camaro Crashes Into Tractor-Trailer on Interstate 80
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened at approximately 1:30 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 80 near the Seventh Street off-ramp in San Francisco.
Investigators said an 18-year-old driver operating a Chevrolet Camaro made an unsafe movement to the right side of the roadway and collided with a nearby tractor-trailer.
The impact sent both vehicles into a row of crash-absorbing sand barrels positioned along the freeway.
While the truck managed to remain on the roadway and come to a stop, the Camaro continued moving forward in a devastating chain of events.
Car Plunges 25 Feet Into Impound Yard
Authorities said the Camaro vaulted over a metal bridge railing and plunged approximately 25 feet into a police impound yard below.
The vehicle then struck several empty cars before flipping over and eventually coming to rest on its roof.
The violent crash left multiple occupants trapped inside the wreckage.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and worked quickly to rescue the injured teenagers.
The driver was able to escape from the vehicle on his own and was transported to a hospital with moderate injuries.
A 17-year-old front-seat passenger also suffered moderate injuries and received medical treatment.
Teen Graduate Killed in Crash
Firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to free two passengers trapped in the back seat of the overturned Camaro.
One 18-year-old passenger sustained major injuries and was hospitalized.
A 17-year-old boy, however, did not survive.
Authorities said the teenager, who was reportedly not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.
While officials have not publicly released his identity, reporting by SFGATE confirmed the victim had recently graduated from Hillsdale High School just days before the crash.
The loss has devastated classmates, teachers and family members who were preparing to celebrate his future.
School Community Mourns Loss
Following news of the tragedy, the San Mateo Union High School District released a statement expressing grief over the loss.
“There are no words that can fully capture the grief and shock of losing a member of our Hillsdale High School family,” the district said in a statement obtained by SFGATE.
