Fatal Gunfight on I-88 Multi-Town Police Chase Ends in Deadly Shooting Near Maple Park

MAPLE PARK, IL — A high-stakes police pursuit that spanned multiple Chicago suburbs ended in a fatal exchange of gunfire on Interstate 88 Monday afternoon, leaving one driver dead and a major highway shuttered for hours.

The incident, which began as a welfare check in Naperville, escalated into a multi-agency chase that crossed county lines before ending in a shootout in the far west suburban area of Maple Park.

The Pursuit: From Naperville to DeKalb County

The chain of events began near the intersection of IL-59 and North Aurora Road in Naperville. According to Illinois State Police (ISP), a Naperville officer spotted a Honda vehicle linked to a missing person reported to be suffering from a mental health crisis.

When officers attempted to make contact, the situation turned volatile. Police report that the driver brandished a firearm before fleeing the scene. The pursuit was then picked up by Warrenville Police, who followed the suspect as he continued to display a weapon while heading westbound toward the rural suburbs.

The Shootout at Keslinger Road

Illinois State Police joined the chase as the suspect moved onto I-88 westbound. As the vehicle crossed into DeKalb County, troopers successfully deployed spike strips, bringing the Honda to a halt near Keslinger Road.

The confrontation quickly turned deadly. ISP officials confirmed that both the driver and a Warrenville police officer discharged their firearms. The driver was struck during the exchange. While officers on the scene attempted life-saving measures, the driver was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Fortunately, no law enforcement officers were injured in the gunfight.

Evidence and Investigation

In the aftermath of the shooting, news footage from the scene showed a handgun lying on the pavement next to the suspect’s vehicle, which had a shattered passenger-side window. A Warrenville police cruiser was also seen being towed from the area as part of the evidence collection.

Because the incident involved multiple agencies and an officer-involved shooting, two separate ISP divisions are now leading the investigation:

  • The Division of Internal Investigation: Reviewing the actions of state troopers involved.
  • The Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 1: Investigating the use of force by the Warrenville police officer.

Commuter Chaos: I-88 Shutdown

The incident caused a total gridlock for Monday evening commuters. All westbound lanes of I-88 were closed for over four hours as investigators processed the extensive crime scene. The highway finally reopened to traffic around 7:30 p.m.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased driver, pending notification of next of kin.
