Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida — A late-night shooting outside a Walgreens has left two people dead and a community shaken, after authorities say a man driven by jealousy opened fire on a woman and her companion in a targeted attack.
The incident unfolded on March 13 in this coastal suburb near Jacksonville, where deputies responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire at a pharmacy along Palm Valley Road.
Two victims killed in shocking parking lot attack
According to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, the victims — 46-year-old Melissa Wood and 42-year-old Jason Chatham — were found with gunshot wounds after the shooting.
Both were rushed to nearby hospitals but later died from their injuries.
“Families are going to mourn two people that were shot and killed in a parking lot of Walgreens over a domestic violence situation,” Sheriff Rob Hardwick said.
The sudden and violent nature of the attack has left residents stunned, especially given the public setting where it occurred.
Suspect arrested after dramatic manhunt
Authorities quickly identified 32-year-old Christian Barrios as the suspect. He now faces multiple serious charges, including:
- Two counts of first-degree murder
- Burglary of an occupied dwelling
- Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
- Shooting into a vehicle
- Grand theft of a motor vehicle
After the shooting, deputies tracked Barrios using K-9 units to a nearby golf course associated with the PGA Tour. However, he managed to flee before being captured the following day in Nassau County.
“He is out of prison again on probation, committing another violent felony,” the sheriff said.
Officials say Barrios allegedly stole a BMW, crashed it, and attempted to escape on foot into nearby woods before being taken into custody.
Motive linked to jealousy and past relationship
Investigators believe the shooting was fueled by romantic jealousy, with Barrios allegedly targeting Melissa Wood over suspicions related to her personal life.
According to an arrest warrant, the suspect had asked his mother to drive him to the location where he believed Wood would be.
“He frantically jumped out of the car when he saw her vehicle,” the report states.
Moments later, the suspect’s mother reportedly heard multiple gunshots and immediately called 911.
Family members, however, dispute claims of an ongoing relationship, stating that any connection between Wood and the accused had already ended.
Victims remembered as loving and kind
Loved ones are mourning the loss of both victims, remembering them for their warmth and impact on those around them.
Melissa Wood’s brother described her as a compassionate and selfless person who always put others first.
“She was such an amazing, outgoing, generous, and compassionate person. She would help anyone, even a stranger,” he shared.

Jason Chatham was also remembered fondly by family members, including his niece, who shared emotional tributes highlighting his joyful spirit and close bond with loved ones.
Ongoing investigation as community seeks answers
Authorities continue to investigate the full timeline and circumstances surrounding the shooting. The case has reignited conversations about domestic violence, gun access, and repeat offenders, particularly after officials confirmed the suspect was already on probation.
The tragedy has left a lasting impact on the community, as residents grapple with how quickly violence can erupt in everyday settings.
As the legal process moves forward, both families are left mourning an unimaginable loss while seeking justice for their loved ones.
