Los Angeles, California — A routine cleaning project turned into a major public safety emergency after a Los Angeles homeowner discovered 20 sticks of dynamite hidden inside a freezer in her garage, prompting evacuations and a large-scale response from police and bomb disposal experts.
Authorities say the startling discovery was made in the Valley Glen neighborhood on Wednesday morning.
Homeowner Discovers Dynamite in Garage Freezer
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to the 6100 block of Rhodes Avenue around 9 a.m. after a woman contacted authorities regarding a suspicious discovery.
The homeowner reportedly found the explosives while cleaning out a freezer located in her garage.
Police said the woman told investigators she had no idea who the dynamite belonged to or how it ended up inside the appliance.
Authorities noted that the freezer came with the home when she and her late husband purchased the property years ago. Her husband reportedly died several years earlier.
The unexpected find immediately triggered a significant emergency response.
Bomb Experts Confirm Explosives Were Active
Specialized bomb technicians were called to examine the material.
According to Capt. Warner Castillo of the LAPD’s North Hollywood Division, bomb experts confirmed that the 20 sticks of dynamite were active.
As a precaution, police began evacuating nearby residents while authorities assessed the danger.
Officers went door-to-door throughout the neighborhood informing residents about the situation and directing them to safety.
The explosives reportedly weighed between 10 and 15 pounds, raising concerns about the potential consequences if they accidentally detonated.
Neighborhood Evacuated as Streets Closed
Authorities established a safety perimeter around the home while bomb disposal teams worked to neutralize the explosives.
According to police, approximately 32 residents within a 500-foot radius were evacuated from the area.
Officials said another 22 residents chose to remain inside their homes during the operation.
Several streets throughout the neighborhood were temporarily closed while emergency crews worked to secure the scene.
The evacuation remained in place until bomb experts determined the threat had been safely eliminated.
Explosives Safely Neutralized
Bomb technicians reportedly soaked the dynamite in diesel fuel to render it safe before preparing it for transport.
The explosives were then scheduled to be placed inside a specialized containment vessel and removed to an undisclosed location.
Authorities also noted that no fuses or blasting caps were discovered near the dynamite.
Capt. Castillo said investigators were uncertain whether the moisture found on the dynamite resulted from instability or simply from ice melting inside the freezer.
“I’m not an expert, but whoever put it there knew that it was going to be safe, for what it’s worth,” Castillo said.
Mystery Remains Unsolved
Despite the alarming discovery, police said they are not currently treating the case as a criminal matter.
Instead, investigators are classifying the explosives as “lost/found property” while attempting to determine how they ended up inside the freezer.
Authorities explained that dynamite can legally be obtained for certain construction-related purposes, though strict permits and licenses are generally required.
Officials also warned that the amount of dynamite discovered could have caused catastrophic damage had it detonated.
“Anything from hearing loss, a lot of vehicle alarms would be going off, and a lot of structural damage would have been done around the properties and, God forbid, some people could have lost their lives or even be maimed with that amount of dynamite,” Castillo said.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to uncover the origin of the explosives and how they remained hidden for so many years.
