Last Thursday, both the High School Math Team and Middle School Math Team competed at the annual SWAL Math Competition. This year’s competition was held at Riverdale.

High School Results

First off, we have the High School team. Five students from each division (Algebra 1, Geometry, Advanced Algebra, Pre. Calculus, Calculus) compete both individually and as a team. Students take three individual tests as well as one team test. For the team contest, an individual average is calculated and the team test score is added to this average to get each division’s overall score. None of our teams placed first this year, but we were very close in four of the five divisions. The Algebra team tied for 2nd, the Geometry team placed 2nd, the Advanced Algebra team tied for 2nd, and the Calculus team was also tied for 2nd. For individual awards, one gold, one silver, and one bronze are awarded (unless there are ties). This year, seven High School Mathletes earned these honors, including:

Algebra 1: Tyler Nordstrom – Silver, Alana DuBois – Bronze

Geometry: Jared Wedig – Bronze

Advanced Algebra: Drew Hottenstein – Silver, Callie Pierce – Bronze, Jazmine Cool – Bronze

Pre-Calculus: Chloe Oberhauser – Bronze

The High School team is coached by Mr. McWilliams and Mrs. Nothem.

Middle School Results

In the Middle School, each school is allowed to bring 10 participants. At least four out of these 10 have to be 7th graders. Each participant worked individually and had to complete several challenging problems covering a variety of math concepts. Each problem was assigned a point value based on the level of difficulty. Students earned points by answering the problems correctly. These problems were divided into four sections. Each section had to be completed in 15 minutes. A total of 80 students competed in the contest from all 8 SWAL schools. Multiple participants can win medals, as long as they have reached or surpassed the score requirement. This year, all 10 Middle School Mathletes received a medal. Here is how they did:

Gold Medal:

Malea Aschliman (8th Grade) – 6th Overall

Derek Hottenstein (8th Grade) – T7th Overall
