Scott Schmitz was born in Dodgeville, WI, August 28, 1962. He was raised on his family farm in Mineral Point, WI, where he attended Mineral Point Schools. 

In his years at Mineral Point High School, Schmitz lettered in Football for 2 years, and Wrestling for 4. After graduating from Mineral Point, Schmitz attended the University of Wisconsin, where he wrestled for 4 years. 

Schmitz eventually made the transfer to the University of Platteville WI, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and Health. In 1987, Schmitz began teaching and coaching in Mineral Point and has coached and taught at Mineral Point for the past 28 years. Schmitz as a coach accomplished many high school wrestling records, his records being 444-121-3. 

When asked what it was like for him to wrestle for the University of Wisconsin Schmitz was quoted saying, “It was an honor,” for him. 

Schmitz was asked about his accomplishments and how they made him feel he was quoted saying, “I don’t see them as honors for myself, but the kids because without them he wouldn’t have those honors.” 

Lastly, Schmitz was asked what made him want to go into physical education where he was quoted, “I liked group activities and they always seemed like fun classes.” 

A former wrestler of Schmitz was Curtis Fiedler. Fiedler was asked about what it was like to be coached by Schmitz. Where he was quoted saying, “[it was] like having a second dad in the wrestling room for ya- he always put you in the best position to be successful on the wrestling mat and in the classroom. Speaking on behalf of the other wrestlers, he felt like a father- thousands of sons who went through that room and that’s why we all look at him as the G.O.A.T.”
