John P. Paynter was a 1946 graduate of Mineral Point High School.  He earned his Bachelor of Music degree in 1950 and his Master of Music degree in 1951 both from Northwestern University.  While an undergraduate, Paynter played the clarinet as a member of the Northwestern University Marching Band when they performed in the 1949 Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.  At the age of 23, Paynter became the second of only three band directors in Northwestern history.  A position he would hold for over 40 years.  A month before his passing in 1996, he would lead the Northwestern Marching Band at the Rose Bowl.
