Summer’s over, and fall sports are back. The Dodge-Point soccer team is off to a hot start with a 5-0 win over Mauston. In the last few years, this program has come out with a bang and finished its season with a winning record. They hope to continue that this season as well. Kyle Glynn is the head coach and received coach of the year in 2021 for finishing the conference with an 8-0 record. Assistant coach Bakkan has been helping coach this team for eight years and coaches like no other.
This year, the program has a total of 35 players, with 24 players on varsity. The senior class is the majority of the team, with 13 seniors. They are setting a bright future for themselves.
If you don’t know much about soccer, here are some of the basics. In high school, you play a total of 90 minutes per game, so 45 min halves. Here are some of the rules you must follow: if the ball touches your hand, the other team gets a free kick. This rule applies to all players except the goalkeepers on each team. A penalty kick occurs when you touch the ball with your hand, or shoving occurs near the goalie, “the box.” You can receive a yellow card by showing unsportsmanlike behavior or getting a handball inside the box. Two yellow cards will result in a red card. If you get a red card, you will be suspended from the upcoming game. Those terms might sound confusing initially, but you can learn them later on. Soccer player Brody Miller says, “ In soccer, you must be prepared to run a lot and get pushed to your limits,” so if you are looking to be another addition to Dodge-Point Soccer, just know it will not be easy.
When asked what he loves most about soccer, freshman Tyce Sylvester says, “Being in an active environment with my friends while getting challenged to my physical limit.” This shows what soccer can genuinely do for a person. This sport also has the power to make your blood flow fast. What Brody, a junior soccer player at Dodge-Point, loves most about soccer is “the adrenaline of catching someone on a breakaway and having to slide tackle to stop them from scoring.” This team is made up of great kids who have done great things and aren’t going to stop now.
