The Mineral Point Girls Volleyball team is off to a great start this season. Their record for the season is 7-0. The fight and dedication that this team has, is what Mineral Point Volleyball has been looking for for years. Last Thursday, the girls took on the Southwestern Wildcats. The team lost the first set. In the second set, they ended up winning 25-13. The third set they won 25-11. In the fourth set, the team fought hard and ended up winning 25-18.
Head coach Kari Kabat was asked about the match against Southwestern. She “ knew the match against Southwestern would be tough. They always bring a lot of energy and they are very scrappy on defense. We always have to pass well in that gym as well because of the low ceilings. We practiced a lot of serve receive in preparation and really focused on keeping our passes lower. It was a huge game for us. Everyone clicked and really performed well. Southwestern did a great job of focusing on our middles and really forced us to the pins, but we had dominant performances from Maddy and Malea and they both had a phenomenal night. But everyone played amazing from top to bottom and it was a great team win that was much needed to boost our confidence.”
When asked about the season so far as a whole, Coach Kabat said, “I love this team. This group has been one of the most fun and coachable groups of kids I have ever had the pleasure of coaching. They listen and try to improve every day, and they enjoy being with each other. The best teams are not always the ones with the most talent, but those that have a special connection and play well together. I believe we have that group this year. We have been competitive in every game we have played this year. Every loss has been to a team that I think we could beat if we played to our fullest potential. But that is sports, sometimes everything is on and clicking and sometimes it’s not. But I am loving the team that comes out when we are rising to a big challenge. They can beat anyone!”
