Science Night
Each fall, numerous people across Wisconsin partake in the Wisconsin Science Festival. This year, Mineral Point High School joined in. The fair provided an opportunity for students to create projects about topics they’re passionate about and for outside organizations to share their love of science.
Science Night took place in the high school on Tuesday, October 17th, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Many seventh-grade students were there, displaying projects such as a baking soda volcano, a circuit board, and eye-tracking software. There were also research projects made by 6th graders, including ones on Albert Einstein, Eli Whitney, and Marie Curie. Mineral Point High School’s own Environmental Club, the Earth-Wise Club (EWC), had exhibits centered around solar power, recycling, and why environmentalism is necessary. High school science teacher Mr. Steger had a Van de Graaff generator, plasma lamps, and an optical illusion bowl. Mineral Point Elementary School was represented by Mrs. Uppena and Ms. Miess who had a questioning center and many cool library resources.
Other participants included high school librarian, Mrs. McCoy, and Mineral Point Public Library director, Diane Palzkill, who partnered with UW Polar Expeditions to share virtual reality experiences through the game Waddle. There was also a Sources of Strength booth where families could learn more about what is being done with leadership from students to build a healthy and strong community.
In addition to MP school participants, University of Wisconsin-Madison students and faculty from their Animal & Dairy Sciences program made hot dogs from scratch. Traevyn Galle participated in this project, and stated, “It was so cool, and I had so much fun with the experience!”
Dr. Fox, Dr. Ryberg, and Nurse Practitioner Seman with Upland Hills Health did a hands-on suturing procedure with a banana and showed the similarity between human organs and a cow heart. They stated on Facebook, “We’re proud to support science education!”
Also, the Clean Local Energy Alliance – Now! (CLEA-N), Sources of Strength, Wisconsin Conservation Voters, and the Mineral Point Public Library displayed information about their organizations.
The Science Night was an engaging experience that got students and their families excited about science!
