Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — Multiple regions across the United States are preparing for another active stretch of severe weather as rounds of thunderstorms threaten the East, Midwest, and Rockies throughout the week.
Forecasters warn that some storms could become dangerous, bringing damaging wind gusts, lightning, hail, and isolated tornado risks to millions of residents from the Northeast to the central Plains.
Severe Weather Threat Expands Wednesday
Meteorologists say a cold front moving eastward on Wednesday will fuel severe thunderstorm development across several states.
Areas from eastern Ohio to western and central Pennsylvania, as well as parts of New York, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, and eastern Kentucky, are expected to face the greatest storm threat during the day and evening hours.
The primary concern in the Northeast will be localized damaging wind gusts, with forecasters warning that some storms may generate winds approaching 70 mph.
In addition to strong winds, a few storms may also produce pea- to marble-sized hail, increasing the risk of damage to vehicles, roofs, and outdoor property.
Lightning is expected to accompany many of the storms, creating dangerous conditions for outdoor activities and travel.
Powerful Winds Threaten Rockies Region
At the same time, a separate weather threat will unfold across parts of the northern Rockies.
Forecasters say western Montana, central and eastern Idaho, western Wyoming, and northern Utah could experience dangerous winds and isolated severe thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and night.
Wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph are expected in parts of the region.
Winds of that strength can create hazardous driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles such as trucks and SUVs, and may also cause scattered power outages and downed tree limbs.
Interestingly, meteorologists noted that many of the strongest winds may occur without rainfall or thunderstorms at all.
Instead, widespread dry wind gusts could impact large areas, creating dangerous travel conditions and increasing wildfire concerns in some locations.
Storm Activity Expected to Intensify Into Weekend
The active weather pattern is expected to continue through the end of the week and into the weekend.
Forecasters predict that multiple clusters of heavy thunderstorms may develop from the central Plains into the Midwest between Thursday and Friday before storm activity intensifies further over the weekend.
By Saturday afternoon and evening, severe storms are expected across parts of:
- Kansas
- Western and northern Oklahoma
- Northwestern Texas
- Western Missouri
These storms could bring another round of dangerous weather conditions to the region.
Damaging Winds and Hail Main Concerns
The primary threats associated with the weekend storms include damaging wind gusts and large hail.
Meteorologists say many storms may produce winds between 60 and 70 mph, strong enough to damage trees, power lines, and structures.
The wind gust forecast for Saturday is 80 mph, indicating the possibility of especially intense storms in isolated areas.

Large hail may also accompany stronger thunderstorms, posing additional risks to homes, vehicles, and agriculture.
Although tornadoes are not expected to be the dominant threat at this time, forecasters caution that even a single severe thunderstorm can quickly become dangerous.

With storm threats stretching across multiple regions over several days, weather experts are encouraging residents to closely monitor forecasts and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
Officials recommend securing loose outdoor items, avoiding unnecessary travel during severe storms, and having multiple ways to receive weather alerts.
