Miami, Florida — Floridians preparing for beach trips, cookouts and outdoor gatherings this Memorial Day weekend may need to brace for intense heat, high humidity and scattered thunderstorms across much of the state.
Weather officials say the holiday weekend will offer an early preview of Florida’s summer conditions, with dangerous heat indices, muggy nights and storm chances expected from the Panhandle to South Florida.
Florida Braces for Heat and Humidity
According to the Florida Division of Emergency Management, hot and humid conditions are expected statewide throughout the Memorial Day weekend.
Afternoon temperatures are forecast to climb into the upper 80s and low 90s along the East Coast, while areas along the West Coast and Panhandle could see temperatures rise into the middle 90s.
However, the humidity will make conditions feel significantly hotter.
Officials warned that “feels-like” temperatures could push into the upper 90s and even surpass 100 degrees in isolated areas, especially during peak afternoon hours.
Even overnight conditions are expected to remain uncomfortable.
“Overnight low temperatures will be warm and muggy,” officials said, with lows staying in the 70s across most of the state and some metro areas struggling to drop below 80 degrees overnight.
Beachgoers Warned About Rip Currents
Many Florida residents are expected to head to the coast for the long holiday weekend, but meteorologists say beach conditions may come with added dangers.
AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson said weather patterns will remain fairly consistent across all three days of the weekend.
“Expect typical late May partly sunny, hot and humid conditions each afternoon with highs in the low to mid 90s away from the coast with slightly cooler conditions along the Florida East Coast with a steady ocean breeze,” Anderson explained.
He also warned beachgoers about potentially hazardous surf conditions.
“Also, there may be an elevated risk for strong rip currents along the East Coast this weekend.”
Officials are encouraging swimmers and tourists to remain cautious before entering the water and to monitor local beach advisories.
Afternoon Thunderstorms Could Disrupt Plans
While much of the weekend will feature sunshine and summer heat, scattered storms are also expected in several regions.
Meteorologists say there is a chance for early-morning coastal showers, followed by isolated afternoon thunderstorms, particularly across Central Florida and the western side of the state later in the day.
The western Panhandle, especially around the Pensacola area, is expected to face the highest risk for stronger storms.
“The highest risk for thunderstorms each day will be across the western Panhandle, especially in the Pensacola area, where we may see some heavy, drenching thunderstorms each day and evening,” Anderson said.
Forecast Breakdown Across Major Florida Cities
Cities throughout Florida are expected to experience similar weather patterns, although rain chances will vary by region.
In Miami, temperatures are forecast to remain around the mid-to-upper 80s with only a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout the weekend.

Meanwhile, Orlando, Tampa, Fort Myers, and Naples could see temperatures in the 90s along with higher afternoon thunderstorm chances ranging from 40% to 60%.
Along the East Coast, cities such as Daytona Beach, Melbourne, and West Palm Beach are expected to remain slightly cooler due to ocean breezes, though gusty winds and scattered showers are still possible.
Drought Conditions Continue Across Florida
Despite the possibility of scattered rain and thunderstorms, much of Florida remains under drought conditions.
“Keep in mind, much of the state remains under extreme drought and any rainfall will be beneficial,” Anderson noted.
Officials are encouraging residents to stay hydrated, limit prolonged outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day and continue monitoring local forecasts as conditions develop through the holiday weekend.
