Family Gathered Every Saturday—Now 4 Dead After Devastating Chicago Fire, Police Suspect Arson

Chicago, Illinois — A Chicago neighborhood is mourning after a devastating overnight house fire claimed the lives of two foster children and two adults in what authorities are now investigating as a possible arson attack.

The deadly fire broke out in the city’s West Englewood neighborhood early Wednesday morning, leaving behind a burned-out home, shattered family memories and a community searching for answers.

Deadly Fire Breaks Out Before Dawn

Authorities said emergency crews responded to the residence in the 6200 block of South Paulina Street shortly before 2 a.m. on May 20 after reports of a fire engulfing the home.

According to the Chicago Police Department, two adults suffered severe burns during the incident.

“A 57-year-old female victim and a 62-year-old male victim sustained severe burns to their bodies and were transported to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition, where they have been pronounced [dead],” police said in a statement.

Four children were also inside the home during the fire, including boys aged 14, 15 and 16, along with an 8-year-old girl.

Foster Children Among Victims

Officials confirmed that the 8-year-old girl and the 15-year-old boy later died at the hospital, while the two remaining children survived and are currently listed in stable condition.

Loved ones later identified the victims as Reginald Wilson, his wife Lisa Brown, and her foster children Ja’Quan, 15, and Royalty Rattler, 8.

The heartbreaking tragedy has deeply impacted the community, especially because the family was known for caring for foster children and bringing neighbors together.

Neighbors and Firefighters Rescue Children

As flames tore through the property, firefighters and local residents rushed to help rescue children trapped inside the burning home.

According to reports, two of the older children were saved after being caught from a window outside the residence.

Photos from the scene later showed the house heavily destroyed, with blackened walls, shattered windows and children’s toys scattered outside the burned property.

Authorities believe the fire may have been started from outside the house, leading investigators to classify the case as a possible arson attack.

“Area One detectives are investigating the incident, which is currently classified as an Arson investigation,” police said.

Son Remembers Loving Family

The emotional devastation has been overwhelming for surviving family members. Antonio Wilson, whose parents died in the blaze, described the victims as a close-knit family who regularly gathered together.

“My family was a family, we stuck together,” he said.

He also spoke emotionally about the loss of young Royalty, whose birthday was approaching.

“They didn’t deserve this,” he added. “Royal’s birthday is on June 1st. Her birthday was coming up. She didn’t deserve this.”

Antonio recalled how the family spent weekends together enjoying barbecues, movies and family gatherings.

“Every time I see that porch, it just reminds me of home and family. And to come see it look like that, it hurt,” he said. “My family kept bikes in the front for all the kids to play on. We meet up every Saturday for family events whether it’s just watching a movie or having a barbecue every Saturday faithfully. I don’t know what to do now.”

Community Demands Answers

Local officials and neighbors have expressed heartbreak over the tragedy as investigators continue searching for evidence.

“This house had a family in it, this house had children in it, and yet this house was set on fire,” said Ray Lopez, alderman of Chicago’s 15th Ward.

Neighbors also remembered the family as warm and welcoming.

“They barbequed in the front, they had a little canopy out there, they played their music at night,” neighbor Andrew Atchinson said.

“I’m heartbroken,” he added. “This is terrible. This is truly terrible.”

Authorities are asking residents to check security and doorbell camera footage from the area between midnight and 1 a.m. as the investigation continues.
